Joel Stewart’s painting and fine art work is above all derived from a lifelong love and practice of drawing. It is an exploration of place, memory, colour, gesture, emotion, improvisation, depiction and abstraction. Even at its most painterly, the core approach is founded in the exploration of drawing and its individuality and expressiveness.
Joel was born in Barnsley in 1977 and spent his earliest years in a commune on a windswept hillside north of the city of Sheffield. He obtained a first class degree in illustration from Falmouth University, Cornwall, in 2000. In 2023 he returned to Sheffield and the Peak District after many years in London and 6 more spent living aboard a riverboat on the non-tidal Thames south of Oxford.
Joel contributed to the creation of songs and music for both the B.O.T & the Beasties and the Abney & Teal tv series. He also makes and repairs violins and musical instruments.
Joel's awards for illustration include:
Macmillan prize for children's book illustration in 2000.
